Four Concepts That Explain Everything
New to genetic ancestry? These four ideas are all you need.
G25 Coordinates
Global25 (G25) is the community standard for genetic ancestry analysis. 25 principal component values position you in the genetic landscape of all humanity. MYDNATLAS uses the same scaled G25 coordinate format accepted by Vahaduo, G25Studio, and other popular tools, bring existing coordinates in, or export yours to use anywhere.

Genetic Distance
Distance tells you how genetically similar you are to another population. The lower the number, the closer the match. A distance of 3 means "very similar ancestry." A distance of 15 means "very different backgrounds."

PCA Plots
PCA puts you on a visual map alongside thousands of other populations. Populations clustered near you are your closest genetic relatives. It's the easiest way to see where you fit, no numbers needed, just look at the map.
Clusters = genetically similar groups. Your dot shows where YOU are.
Mixture Modelling
This finds which combination of reference populations best explains your DNA. For example: "55% Anatolian Farmer + 30% Western Hunter-Gatherer + 15% Yamnaya Steppe." The quality score tells you how good the fit is.
Lower fit distance = better model. Under 2.0 is excellent.

Closest Population Match
"Your closest match is Sardinian at distance 3.2, followed by Tuscan at 3.8 and South Italian at 4.1." This means your DNA is most similar to modern Sardinians, who preserved a high level of ancient Neolithic farmer ancestry.
Ancestry Breakdown
"58% Anatolian Farmer + 22% Western Hunter-Gatherer + 12% Caucasus Hunter-Gatherer + 8% Yamnaya Steppe", A classic Mediterranean profile. High farmer ancestry from the Neolithic migration out of Anatolia ~8,000 years ago, with older hunter-gatherer roots and a smaller Bronze Age steppe contribution.

Archaic DNA
"Neanderthal: 2.1% · Denisovan: 0.3%", Typical for Southern Europeans. Most non-African populations carry 1.5–2.5% Neanderthal DNA from interbreeding ~50,000 years ago.
Distance vs. Affinity, What's the Difference?
Distance = "Who is genetically closest to me overall?" (raw coordinate similarity). Affinity = "Who shares my exact ancestral recipe?" (similar hunter-gatherer/farmer/steppe mix). Two populations can be geographically distant but share a very similar ancestral makeup.
Use Distance when:

Important Limitations
- ⚠Cannot trace recent genealogy (less than ~500 years)
- ⚠Not a diagnostic test. Health markers are informational only, never act on one without a clinician
- ⚠A model is only as good as the reference populations behind it, where a group was never sampled, no fit can find it
- ⚠Western Eurasia is sampled far more densely than Africa, South Asia or Oceania, so results are coarser for some ancestries
- ⚠Percentages are the best-fitting model, not a measurement, read them alongside the fit distance, never on their own
